THE UD ALMERIA football club scored a vital 3-1 home win yesterday in a bad-tempered match against Sporting in which the referee showed seven yellow cards and sent three players off.
The match started badly for Almeria when defender Chico was sent off in the 11th minute for a deliberate handball on the goal line and the subsequent penalty saw Almeria go 0-1 down.
However, the team rallied and equalised minutes later when midfielder, Crusat, calmly slid the ball beneath Sporting’s goalkeeper.
Almeria struck again minutes before the half-time whistle, going into the break one goal ahead.
In the second half, the mood of the match began to disintegrate. In the first half, Sporting’s players had proved to be anything but, having earned four yellow cards and they received three more in the second half. Any hopes of getting back into the match were dashed in a two minute meltdown during the closing stages that saw two Sporting players sent off and Almeria push the score to 3-1.
UD Almeria are now 15th in the Spanish league with 22 points from 21 matches. Yesterday’s win means they are four points clear of the relegation zone.
