A TEENAGER in the town of Cuevas de Almanzora dropped dead yesterday afternoon while playing football.
Events began in the early afternoon. The 19-year-old Ecuadorian played in a football team and participated in a friendly league against other teams from the Levante and Almanzora areas. But three minutes after kick-off, the adolescent suddenly passed out and fell to the floor.
Given the gravity of the symptoms he displayed, an air ambulance was called from the la Inmaculada hospital in Huercal Overa and doctors from the local health centre, located next to the football ground, rushed to help him.
However, despite their best efforts to revive the youth, he died on the pitch.
Huercal Overa mayor, Jesus Caicedo, said: “The worst thing was, the young man’s parents and various friends were at the match and witnessed the entire incident.”
According to Sr Caicedo, the teenager had fainted days before his death, which led him to be taken to hospital. Sr Caicedo said: “According to what the family has told me, he was discharged as doctors didn’t find anything wrong and said the incident was due to over-exertion from playing sport.”
