A 45 year old man has been arrested after he robbed a bank on the Avenida del Mediterraneo in Almería for a second time - the same bank where his spouse had her account, and the same account where the man hid his ill gotten gains.
The man is accused of having robbed the same branch earlier this month, as well as several other banks throughout the city. His technique was always the same - he would enter, shortly after the bank had opened, with a knife, and demand that the money be put into a bag.
The two attacks on the bank on Avenida del Mediterraneo alone netted the man some €12,000.
Police had setup a special operation, called Operation Raya, to try to catch the man, who always attacked wearing a scarf and sunglasses. This time, when the man entered the branch, the employee who had been on duty in the first attack hit the panic button.
Police arrived, and seeing what was going on inside, waited until the man came outside to pounce on him and arrest him.
A later search of his house found detailed maps of banks he had robbed, along with bank statements proving that he always carefully put his loot into a savings account.
According to police, the man was a well educated person who had been left in dire economic straights by the recession, and had turned to crime to keep up his "extravagent" lifestyle.
