A Guardia Civil officer was injured this morning in a gun battle with ETA terrorists in Navarre, in the north of Spain.
Events began at 03:30 this morning when the injured officer surprised various terrorists attempting to place a bomb at the Guardia Civil compound in the town of Leitza. Shots were exchanged and the officer was left with a broken arm after being struck by a bullet.
The officer is currently in hospital and doctors say his life is in no danger.
Canine units of the Guardia Civil are searching the mountains close to Leitza in an attempt to pick up the trail of the terrorists.
A Guardia Civil officer was killed at the same Leitza compound in 2002.
