A DETAILED study on Spaniard’s relationship with alcohol was published last week.
The study was drawn up by Spanish university professor and biochemist, David Rodriguez, and published in his book “Alcohol and the Brain”. In it, he states that Spaniards drink the equivalent of 10 litres of alcohol each year on average and that 5% of the population drink enough to risk causing themselves serious harm.
Sr Rodriguez also analyses the reasons why Spaniards drink and concludes that many people feel unable to socialise without the aid of alcohol. He also laments “excessive social tolerance” towards drunkenness although he states that “it is tolerated up to a certain point, while it seems funny to us, after which people tend to shun the drinker”.
The book examines alcoholism in Spain and concludes that while the disease is not hereditary “there are families with a greater genetic predisposition towards alcoholism than others”.
Professor Rodriguez ends by saying he does not consider any form of alcohol beneficial, not even the famous “glass of red wine with food”. He said: “There are many other forms to care for your body than drinking.”
