A study released by the Ballearic Islands Government has discovered that over the 1998-2008 period, 12.2% of all road traffic accidents on the island of Mallorca involved British citizens.
Damià Borràs, deputy for Traffic in the government, said that out of the 2,294 accidents registered in the last 10 years, 280 were caused or involved a British driver. 3.6% of the islands population is British, but 71% of all tourists were from the UK. The deputy said that confusion over the side of the road to drive on was one of the main causes of accidents. A series of road safety signs in English have been installed in 10 major black spots, such as outside the airport and port.
Ole Thorson, director of Ingeniería de Tráfico, S.L. (INTRA), the company that compiled the report, suggested that the high percentage of British citizens in traffic accidents was due to their unfamiliarity with the Spanish system of driving, and that in an emergency situation drivers tended to rely on their habits.
