A GUARDIA CIVIL traffic officer in Galicia has been jailed for two years and fined €2,888 for stealing a credit card from a corpse and going on a spending spree.

The officer admitted he had stolen the card from the body of a driver who died, along with two other people, in a car accident in Galicia in 2002, and had spent some €1,300 on it in 68 different transactions.

He had waited until his partner had gone to take witness statements before pocketing the card.

The officer even signed the dead mans name on the receipts.

The Government has decided to commute the jail sentence but has fired him from the police force.
