The National Police today arrested 34 people in connection with a criminal gang organising marriages of convenience.
Police believe the gang arranged marriages between Spaniards and Columbian immigrants seeking Spanish residence. The gang charged immigrants 10,000 euros for the service, of which 3,000 euros was paid to Spaniards, and is thought to have arranged more than 100 weddings in two years. Witnesses received 200 euros each.
A Columbian priest, a lawyer and a government employee are among those arrested. Many of the Columbian immigrants had links with drug trafficking.
